What’s the real reason you haven’t lost weight and kept it off? – let’s cut to the chase!

BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO CHANGE THINGS AT THE SYMPTOM LEVEL RATHER THAN GETTING TO THE SOURCE OR CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. 

The source of your frustration and seeming inability to lose weight and keep it off is what I call;

THE FAT IN YOUR HEAD’

It’s the reason you struggle, it’s the reason you take two steps forward and one back or worse.

It’s the reason nothing you seem to try makes any significant difference

It’s the reason being at your ideal weight and maintaining that without it being an ongoing battle seems like an unreachable goal. 

In this post I’m going to illustrate to you what I mean using a simple process I use in my coaching sessions.  There are many ways that we can reveal the fat in your head but let’s cut to chase and do it in a way that highlights the real problem.  If you pay attention and really get the magnitude of what I’m about to share with you it will change the course of your life from this point forward.  This is the first critical milestone in what I call ‘the weight frustration to freedom solution’

Until you see this and acknowledge it – you are destined to repeat the same frustrating cycles over and over and over and over no matter what diet or weight loss program you try.

(Maybe you have already proven this to yourself)

I’m going to show this to you in such a way that you can actually go away and do it yourself and get a clear picture of what is standing in your way  and what needs to change.

O.k. let’s say you are my client and you’ve come to me to help you lose weight, after the introductions I am first going to ask you what you want?  What are you here to achieve, what would be the ideal outcome for having worked with me etc – we’ll essentially paint a picture of the ideal end result for you.  Now I could embellish on this factor alone as it in itself is also crucial and is one part that most people fail to do or do inefectively.  But for today’s point and post just imagine that we have done that and it’s up on my white board – on one side we have defined exactly what you want and we have bought it to life so you can see, feel and hear it.    At this point you’d be pretty excited right? 

Then we could say o.k.; so here you are now and up there is where you want to be – acknowledging and feeling that there is a gap between where you are and where you want to be is useful as well.

Now here comes the interesting part…..the next thing I’m going to do is to start asking you a series of strategic questions that begin to bring out, you guessed it, the fat in your head.

There are many techniques and questions you can use because you can relate them to weight loss, to dieting or healthy eating, to exercise, to the planning and organization involved and the big one – TO YOU.  But we are going to use just one main question and it’s clever because it instantly reveals what you associate to losing weight and this is all important because it’s your associations that really dictate your behavior.

The question is; when you think about losing weight – what comes to mind?  So to really do this you need to obviously contemplate losing weight, and then you need to tune in and listen carefully – some things will pop straight to mind others will be more subtle whispers, feelings, thoughts or images. 

The above is what we will use for today however I’ll share a quick couple of other tips so you can get a sense of the scope of TFIYH (the fat in your head)

So here is another question you can ask; “what do I think and believe about losing weight?”

Here is another gem of a way to do this;  Assess your current results and work backwards from that.  Basically if you aren’t doing it then you don’t really believe it – meaning you can look at your current results and that will tell you what you really believe and associate to losing weight. Just ask yourself: “if this is where I’m currently at – then what must I really think and believe”?

Ok, here are a couple more; notice what comes after the ‘buts’ i.e. I really want to lose weight but! This will highlight your excuses or all the ways that you excuse yourself from doing what needs to be done.  Excuses are another form of fat in your head.  Another way to reveal similar blocks is to ask – so why haven’t you done it already? What’s stopping you? Provoke yourself a little and see what comes out lol

On that note; you can also notice what you are sensitive to with regards to losing weight – analysing what pushes your buttons will indicate inner conflicts and that is the very stuff preventing you from moving forward. Mixed messages and being in two minds or torn in two different directions just renders you paralyzed.

Alright – so if you only used the first question I guarantee if you get into it you will easily fill a whole page.  I’ve done this with many individuals and in seminars or with groups and here are the sorts of things that arise – just from the question; now think about losing weight – and what comes to mind?

It’s hard work, Boring, a sense of failure, sacrifice, not being able to have what I want, deprivation, dieting, All the times that it hasn’t worked, it works for others but not me, having to discipline my every move, counting calories, feeling not good enough, it takes a long time, I always put it back on again anyway – what’s the point, disbelief that I can do it, can’t stick at it, Constant mind chatter, it’s not fair, exercise – being red faced at the gym, feeling inferior and embarrassed, embarrassed for my kids and so on….

These are the sorts of things that come out – now granted I have focused mainly on the negative but inevitably if someone isn’t at the weight they want to be and is struggling to lose weight – their snapshot is Always 90% negative and that is no coincidence. In fact that is my whole point.

Now there are ways to take things to a deeper level too, when we start to explore self-image – like for most people when they think about losing weight they actually have an image of themselves as overweight pop to mind, and that has a reverse effect that literally reinforces the idea that they are overweight – if they have also failed many times that feeling comes with the image too.  What about your self-esteem?  i.e. are you worth it?  Do you deserve this?  Do you feel confident, resourceful and inspired to take action when you think about losing weight?   What words would follow “I am” with regards to you and weight loss – do you beat yourself up and run yourself down? If so what do you call yourself and in what sort of tone and voice do you use?   These factors are very high up the scale of mind-set impact, they literally govern the way you feel and act;  Are you getting the magnitude of this yet, are you sensing what you are up against and we are only scratching the surface still. 

So we do this sort of exploration and then I write all that comes out (i.e. the fat in your head) on another whiteboard beside what you just told me earlier that you want.

And then i get you to look at both and take it all in and see what you notice and then I say…

So do you think this way of thinking is going to get you to your goal?  What becomes immediately apparent is that these two things (the whiteboards) are going in opposite directions.  It then becomes blatantly clear that there is no way you can ever lose weight with that mindset, and that in fact; it’s your mindset that is preventing you from getting there.  And viola you become acutely aware of the direct link between your current mind-set and your results.  With that you simultaneously recognize what must change (and also that you may have been focusing in the wrong areas up until now) 

So the moral of the story is this;

Firstly; this is the stuff that won’t let you move forward, that cancels out your best intentions, that undermines your genuine efforts.  The crux of the message being that with all of these mixed and contrary messages operating beneath the surface – you are working against yourself my friend!  That’s what the fight and ongoing struggle is made of.  Imagine that all of this time you have been driving with the handbrake on….. 

However now that you know, what will happen is it will be not just like taking the handbrake off but putting your foot on the accelerator at the same time because when you know how to change this stuff you will get the very power that has been working against you to now work for you.

Will you need to put yourself first to lose weight?

The answer to that question is Yes and No - read on to find out why and because this one realization alone could hold part of the key to your breakthrough weight loss success – it has for some of my clients.

The reason I’ve raised this (putting yourself first) issue is because it hovers like an umbrella over many of the smaller more specific issues that arise for some people. For example, “never having enough time or energy to lose weight”

To further clarify things let’s have a look at how this plays out….. In my work with clients – and I’m guessing you might be similar, one of the things that often comes up that undermines their best efforts to lose weight is variations of the idea that losing weight means they would have to put themselves first … Now that wouldn’t be a problem in and of itself except most people also relate that to being selfish – and we tend to have pretty strong feelings around that word which of course won’t let us go there. “I can’t be that selfish, my family/work is more important” – they need me…

Do you find that the day to day stuff involving both family, home life and/or work and “other’s needs” tend to always take precedence and fill up your day.

Do all of these sorts of things seem to get in the way of regular exercise and healthy eating?

Do you only get to yourself if everyone else is taken care of or you meet your own (or someone else s) expectations in your work.

With all this it appears too hard to be organized and do what’s required and if you did that would be “SELFISH” and you might even feel guilty if you do make time for yourself.

If you are starting to relate to this and can maybe see yourself in this picture then you may want to read on because I’ll let you in on how you can comfortably get past this common block to weight loss success.  And believe me it is a block – this is part of  what I call ‘the fat in your head’ and it’s actually a very common issue.

When it comes to weight loss, you must first go there in mind – to go there in body…..

7 big reasons YOU MUST imagine yourself in the body you want…

 

1.  Your body needs a reference for where to go

Image and feel are more the language of the body than words – so you can write your goal down and that will have a minimal effect unless you’ve written it in such a way that the words lead you into your ideal body as an imagined and felt experience.  Athletes and performers communicate, Direct and instruct their body on what to do via image and feel – they imagine themselves doing it.  They
know that if the mind can’t see it – then the body can’t do it.  So too with weight loss – how are you telling your body where to go?  In my work with clients we often find that other than a wishy washy intellectual idea of losing weight or maybe a target weight; they have no clear direction for what they want to create and how it will look and feel.  Your mind-body system has no real understandable or usable reference for where you want it to go.  If that is the case how do you expect to get there?

Working against yourself is like this...

No matter what your personal challenges with regards to losing the weight you want to and keeping it off are, to negate, resolve or over-ride them you must start by getting your mind on-side.  Whether it be self-sabotage, Emotional eating or binging, making bad food choices, not getting to the gym today or the fact that you always put the weight back on again, or even a lack of self-worth or confidence, whatever it is we must start with what’s in this report. 

It’s the first thing that happens in any coaching session to one degree or another depending on the targeted outcome – there is no point proceeding unless you have your mind on-side.

It’s at the heart of all action, change, achievement, progress and any human accomplishment.

You’ll see, if you have been following my other videos and articles, that most of them link naturally back to this factor.  (in actual fact I could tie them all to this one thing however I don’t want to seem like I’m over-doing it with regards to the free report which is part of the reason I wanted to write this post)

Your ability to change your mind, to let go of old worn out conditioning, habits and negative          thinking or emotional attachments and grab new more resourceful ones requires big leverage for      change.  To move away from what’s familiar and what you’ve gotten used to requires massive      leverage or what you might call motivation/inspiration – amplified.   When you take that to the    next level and add another few key ingredients (the elements that are usually missing) to the mix    then you’ve got your mind on-side for the changes you want – it’s now going to be working  with you instead of against you.  It’s like the ultimate readiness for change and new action –  all systems go!  It’ll be like you’ve been driving with the handbrake on all this time and you  suddenly take it off – that’s how you are actually going to get there quicker and so much easier.

The point here is: this inner view or representation is both a reflection of how she sees it and a big part of what keeps her in this illusion that those sorts of foods are attractive and healthy foods aren’t. Understand that these internal pictures cue your nervous system how to feel about something. And of course the fact that anne has such a minimal view around healthy food is (unrealistic) but also means that there are little to no healthy options for her. This proved to be the case, with a little further investigation.

Your views set up internal filters that lead you to see and count some things and to not see or count others. If all you see is basic salad and vegetables and these pictures appear drab, dull and un-attractive. Then it will set up an inner battle to eat these foods and your whole system will rebel against it when you try to.

“The SECRETS you must know to free yourself from weight loss frustration”…

When it comes to losing weight; “is there anyone out there feeling stuck?”

It’s this that lead to me becoming so passionate about helping people shift in this area of weight loss, because I think many people are needlessly stuck and struggling.  Let me invite you to look at this notion of being stuck a bit differently too.  Being seemingly stuck (for example, “nothing seems to work, I can’t seem to make any real progress”, or “I always find myself back where I started or worse”) – is really the result of using ineffective strategies to try and change behaviour.

One of the general areas you are likely going wrong is trying to change behaviour without changing the programmes that run the behaviour.

Here’s another way to think about your so called  “stuckness”……

If you look at your results and you let that then determine how you think and believe about it, then you are stuck.  Because it’s a self-perpetuating cycle isn’t it?

So, if you believe it’s hard to lose weight for example (and you are likely to harbour that belief because you have tried and it hasn’t seemingly worked yet), then really through that belief (and the perceiving and thinking that come with that belief) you are inadvertently setting your whole system up to prove that to be true on a daily basis.

So, as the picture above illustrates, you will tend to “see through those eyes” you will be unconsciously filtering information and essentially be alerted to all the things that let you know that it is indeed hard to lose weight.

How to make sure your diet or eating plan works for you.

What is the true test of whether your eating plan or exercise programme will work for you? It’s how you feel when you think about it. Does it feel like a help, a support, something that you want to do and that is inspiring and pulls you towards it when you bring it to mind? Or does it feel like a drag, a hassle, something you have to do that is more like a bore and a chore.

It’s not an exercise programme or even a diet that’s the problem its how you think and feel about it that makes the difference. If it’s all good then that’s great; if not you have 2 choices; you can either adjust your plan or programme so it takes on a different appeal or you can adjust/refresh your attitude, the way you hold it in mind and how you think about it. (more on that shortly)  Actually there is a third choice too – you can do a bit of both.

Either way the key is to, design programmes, rituals and organizational supports that make it easier to make the choices you want, and that feel good so that you willingly do it again tomorrow. What can you do to move from a feeling of having to, to wanting to?

This is really the secret and notice it’s in your perception of it.
