Introduction

“I’ve been preparing for this my whole life”

If we are going to be working together either in person with coaching or on-line via my books or training courses then it is pretty important that you know who I am and what qualifies me to be here helping you. It’s also important that you know what weight loss frustration to freedom (WLF2F) is all about, how it came to be and most importantly; why it’s the weight loss solution you have been looking for.

Rather than talk about my more formal credentials, qualifications and experience or risk boring you with my history, I thought it more fitting to share  the most recent and relevant parts of my story and more importantly; the story of the development of WLF2F in this more informal way.

“Who’s going to coach the coach?”

There is a little saying in the coaching world that says who’s going to coach the coach?”  Sometimes, you can tend to think that those of us in these sorts of helping roles always “have it together”, are out of reach and don’t encounter the same challenges as you do……..

Well that is definitely not the case in my case; the truth is; I used to be ultra-fit, all I did was move and I loved sports and all things physical.  So back then, I knew how to be slim, fit and healthy – so I have been there…

At that stage I was also building houses for a living so I couldn’t have put on weight if I tried, I weighed about 70 kgs with next to no body fat and stayed that way until ‘the change’.

Then things changed – I went from building to coaching, from lifting, climbing and moving all day to sitting talking and computering.  My diet had always been o.k. It did not change a lot however, I also gradually exercised (weights, running and sport) progressively less. I was overly absorbed in my work and with the stress of running my own business, sometimes inconsistent income, 3 children to support and a few other personal challenges and stresses along the way which I’m sure you have your own versions of too.  The upshot is that amongst other changes I developed an evening habit of a few cans of bourbon and coke – which also lead me to often eat late and by that stage of the night there wasn’t much discretion in what I ate.

So you get the picture and I have now been out of building and in my current line of work for close to 15 years.

To cut a long story short I ended up ‘out of shape’ myself; a recent body composition check saw me about  10-15 kgs overweight depending how you look at it and with a 32% body fat which for me, given what I do as my profession and how ‘in shape’ I always was, was a bit of a rude awakening.  I didn’t pile on tons of weight quickly and I probably didn’t look too overweight compared to someone who was say upwards of 30kgs overweight. In fact you might even be thinking “that’s not that bad” but I know that my body composition (i.e. fat to muscle ratio) has changed completely.  It was not until I actually took some photos that it all became blatantly evident.

It’s actually pretty hard for me to look at these and embarrassing to put them up here – but it’s for a good cause and you’ll learn later why it’s also a powerful motivator and accountability factor.

I could see that 32% body fat quite clearly, I ’d developed a bit of a tummy that didn’t look too bad standing up and sucking in a little but became clearly evident when bending over and the likes. My once firm chest now looked more like the dreaded man boobs and my muscular physique had gotten pretty saggy all round.  Looking from behind I could see the layering covering what was once muscle and I’d developed these kind of gels or saggy bits on the sides of my midsection. I was in a place I never thought I would get to.  On top of that, some recent signs and tests indicated that my internal environment was not great either.  I felt that I was actually lucky that I didn’t look a whole lot worse given the gradual and accumulative shifts in my eating, drinking and exercising habits.

Are you getting the irony here?

If you haven’t noticed yet – the irony is; as I coached and worked closely with others in helping them change in the direction of better health and weight loss in my own life I was gravitating in the opposite direction and ironically I found myself experiencing the very same challenges that my clients are faced with.

At one point, I also wondered if I had got so deep into so many clients psyches and become so obsessed with developing a system that would save them that I had unconsciously taken some of that on.

I had been thinking about and talking about changing things. Things like you know, shaping up my diet, stopping or “moderating” drinking bourbon and getting back into the gym and running regularly for quite some time but guess what; it remained just thoughts and talk and it just wasn’t happening. Are you relating yet?

Can you imagine the frustration! Again this is at the very heart of what I teach and coach others.

However, despite all the magic I knew nothing was happening.

You know you should change but then there is this part of your system that is attached to what you have been doing.  There are these invisible strings pulling on you, wanting to keep you where you are and they seem to be all around you, inside and out – it is in the food or maybe the salt and sugar, it is in your moods and emotional connection to food, eating and your environment.  It is in the people and places that you are accustomed to and it even seems as if they do not want you to change. There is also this ‘in the background’ sense of what you might lose if you do change things, have you ever noticed that?  And on top of that there is the rebel inside of you that just flat out doesn’t want to conform even when you know it’s a good idea (hang on maybe that’s just me) but you will have found that sometimes you do the opposite of what you know you should and can get progressively more ‘anti’ even anti yourself.

So there I was, deep in the frustrating phenomenon of knowing what to do, really wanting to shift, having really important reasons to change and even having the know-how and tools but not doing anything about it.

This is a big part of what I have come to call the craziness and my guess is that maybe you are or have been there too to some degree and you will have felt that there can be a certain resistance to change – even if you know, it’s good for you.

 Then the breakthrough came

Now, my primary intention (almost obsession) has always been to identify what works and to develop a system that would give those that were struggling with weight loss (for reasons that were obvious to me) the missing pieces of the weight loss puzzle.

And literally in a bigger sense to ‘change the way people lose weight’ because I could see a fundamental floor in the bulk of traditional weight loss approaches (in short they were incomplete)

Having over a thousand in depth and intimate coaching sessions with specialist training and skills in understanding mind and behaviour meant that I had gathered a pretty comprehensive and unique insight into the world of weight loss through a range of clients from the obese to those that were carrying  a few KGS more than they wanted to be, HOWEVER…..

This is where the story takes a turn…

As you can probably imagine, the experiences I have described had caused mounting self-doubt around my integrity in coaching others. All this moved me to take a step back and take a good look at myself, my role as a coach and trainer and the system I had been developing and using as a basis for some years now.

In my typical fashion I delved deep into this and AHAA!   Actually, there were a lot of Aha’s; here is what began to become clear to me…

Foremost; my recent experiences have not just been a wake up in many ways personally but more than that it has given me vital additional learning and insights that I couldn’t have gotten any other way and that I am now able to share with you – what I soon realized is that going through this myself was actually a blessing.

Having to find a way out myself allowed me to discover vital new elements to add to my already evidentially effective system, beginning to put into action what I discovered has already provided me with significant positive shifts personally.  By applying what I will soon share with you if you want to learn – I am now out running again and doing weights another 3-4 sessions a week.  My diet has improved and I am now eating more mindfully and consistently well, plus I have significantly cut down on alcohol.  I feel 100% better physically, mentally and emotionally and my energy levels have greatly increased along with my sense of integrity and confidence – my mojo is coming back.

So prior to this experience I thought; having intimate understandings of my client’s mindsets and experiences was enough. However, it seems, having been there myself enabled me to pick up on the final few distinctions I needed.  Given my unique understandings of mindset and behaviour, it was like getting an extreme look at why others do not take action, but instead they keep repeating the same patterns and are stuck.  It revealed to me what you need to do to turn your situation around.

The bottom line here also is that my own experiences have helped me to better understand YOU and what YOU are going through.  They have also given me an even higher level of compassion that is a vital ingredient if I am to serve you at the highest level which is my intention going forward.

Two key things that I have had to adjust my stance on are….

It’s not as easy as I once thought… and the ‘will’ or will-power as you know it definitely does have a role to play especially in the early stages – but it’s only part of the equation, it needs to be used differently than most people think and it plays progressively less of a role.

Confession: Prior to me slipping into bad habits and gaining weight myself it seemed easy from where I was sitting.  I believed fully in the mind as the key to ease (and that part I still believe) however, I’ve come to look at it a little differently as will you too. The caveat here too though is that you can never call it hard either – that will stop you before you start.  Now I can only give you the tip of the iceberg here in terms of my new revelations….

Actually the first one to be released is number 2 in the series and there is an important reason I’m releasing that one first which you’ll find out about later too.

A ‘healthy’ obsession

What I am about to describe has gone on over the past ten to fifteen years and at a more intensified rate over the last 2 -3 years.  When I said it was a bit of an obsession with me I was not exaggerating.

I am talking about me getting up at three o’clock in the morning to write down ideas spawned both by my client sessions and by the intention to find the solution and system I now have.  I would get out of bed again and again as my mind kept delivering me nuances on my latest idea or discovery.  There are also over 10 years of meticulously taking notes from most client sessions, looking at what arose from our interactions.  I wanted to compile what got best results, their biggest and most common questions, feedback, challenges and solutions.  I’ve got 4 file folders over an inch thick with lined refill notes many of which are filled in on both sides packed with what I called programme development files.

So the system you are about to be introduced to is born out of an intensive developmental journey actually more like 20 years in the making all up because I did clinical hypnotherapy, business mindset coaching and worked with athletes before I began to specialize in weight loss.

WLF2F is a 5 stage solution designed to move you out of weight loss frustration and into freedom – this rather appropriate name also represents a new theme based around the 5 main (unaddressed) frustrations I have identified that also fittingly happen to be the 5 milestones you must go through to get from frustration to freedom in losing weight.  They also provide a way to simplify the process of losing weight, serve as a way for you to identify where you are at personally and whether this is for you or not. The end result is a solution that allows you to work smarter rather than harder – through this fresh approach you will find that you’ll get better and even breakthrough results with less effort and less struggle.  In fact you will discover that these two things i.e. more results and less effort are actually synonymous or ‘one in the same’.   All of these revolutionary new concepts will be explained along with the other unique keys to the solution via the free reports, new blog, facebook page and you tube channel.

Completing the weight loss puzzle

What has also become clear to me is that what I offer is THE ENABLER for nutrition and exercise based programmes and services.  What became apparent to me early on is that most diets and weight loss programmes are incomplete because they don’t show you how to change your mind-set or habits.  They have left out the essential components that actually enable you to do what they suggest or outline. So the focus of WLF2F is therefor on supporting these programmes and what you need to do on a physical level and on making the process of losing weight easier for you.  To get more specific it’s about making weight loss doable, easier and self-sustaining.  Self-sustaining is another one of the core concepts embedded within this unique new system and this concept holds the answers to a myriad of the biggest and most common questions I get asked as a coach such as; why can’t I lose weight, why am I stuck and why is it such an effort and struggle, how do I get motivated and stay motivated? What do I do after my diet/programme?  How do I maintain my weight loss or keep the weight off? So real solutions to these sorts of challenges are at the heart of what I offer and were instrumental in shaping the updated system.

WLf2f is for those that have the desire or need but are struggling to get the results they want via usual approaches. My services and system serve to enable you to relish any reputable diet or weight loss programme without it being a struggle and in a way that will naturally set you up for the long term.

The old system was already getting great results….

I’ve already mentioned the personal changes I’ve made as a result of applying just a little of what I discovered so far (I have a few more challenging goals set for myself however there is a special reason I am holding back on that for just a little bit longer which I’ll reveal to you shortly.)

For now just bear in mind that the system I used prior to this, that had already been some 10 years in its evolution, was already getting great results which is why I’m even more excited about the new improved (and some-what enlightened)  version and you should be too.

As I began to question myself and what I was doing I of course began to scrutinize my own material and ask should I be still doing this given what’s occurred in my own life.  I saw that what I taught and my coaching obviously was working for my clients even though my own situation had temporarily gone backwards somewhat.

The proof was in the results my clients had achieved and the subsequent testimonials I had accumulated.   It was also apparent in the feedback from my seminars and the invites I received from other industry experts to share my material with their clients.  They were also sending me their clients that were struggling and most often we would turn them around and they would get the help and the breakthroughs they needed.

Industry leaders like Damian Kristof of ‘downsize me’  fame and Ben Warren the founder of ‘Be Pure’…. have interviewed me to help their clients.  After doing the interview for Damian’s group I was also invited to present a mindset component at one of his weight loss retreats last year. I’ve delivered my material in a series of seminars to both the PHO or Primary health organization and the obesity clinic and also appeared on  TV on the good morning show in New Zealand as ‘the weight loss mindset coach’ and always the feedback and subsequent results that people (who apply what they learn) got was positive.

The people I have helped to lose weight were just like you….

If you are still reading, then what I have shared must resonate with you.  My Guess is that you can relate to my story in your own way, that you have that certain pull towards a better life and a sense that there’s got to be more – that you have much more potential than you are demonstrating right now.  That will be coupled with a certain discontentment and perhaps frustration with things as they currently are, you will feel that this cannot be all there is for you.  How do I know? Because I along with most of the clients I worked with had it too.  I call this the seed and its part of what qualifies you to be here.

Hopefully, sharing my story with you has deepened our connection. I trust that by me being transparent it has broken down a few barriers and shown you that I too am fallible. I wanted you to know that I am relatable, reachable and ‘human’ as opposed to being someone that’s making outrageous claims, offering and doing things you feel are unobtainable or doing that from a place of not really empathizing with what you are going through.   My recent experience has shown me that there may well be an element of disconnection if you are not or have not experienced the same or similar challenges as the people you are committing to help.  I intend to make full use of this realization and phenomenon going forward.

Consequently; part of my goal this year is to heighten the interaction and that connection with you and I will be doing that in a number of different ways.  If my message does speak to you, if you feel it and it strikes a chord with you, then that is a sure sign you are a match to what I have to offer. If this is the case then I encourage you to take things to the next step.

Why I want to be facing the same challenges that you are.

Inspired by the insights I’ve received already from being down and then getting back on the right track to some degree myself I now want to step things up so that I can be right there with you continually as you do what you need to, to achieve your own goals.

My personal goals will entail me taking my own progress to increasing new levels so that i can not only offer my training, expertise and expereinces with clients but so that I can also continue to intimately understand what you are going through and offer ‘first hand’ insights I could only get by taking on similar challenges myself.

That way i can share with you in real time how I use what i’m teaching you, to deal with the myriad of tests and challenges that arise (and I can already feel the resistance)  I will also show you how I am using my own challenges and the programme and guidelines I’ll be following personally to set up for the longer term and to move into effortless maintenance of the fat loss, health and fitness results achieved.  This is really important becasue this is a critical area where WLF2F differs from anything else out there.   It works with and enables what you need to do (and are going to do anyway) on a physical level and uses the very challenges that arise there and the usual stumbling blocks to customize your long term weight loss solution.  Note that the name ‘weight loss frustration to freedom’ is telling; I don’t just want to help you lose weight I want to show you how to have the body and health you want but without the ongoing struggle to either get there or maintain that.
